Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.97 per cent in morning trading. Britain’s FTSE 100 rose 0.88 per cent, Germany’s DAX gained 1.15 per cent and France’s CAC 40 climbed 0.79 per cent.

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei closed flat, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 1.79 per cent.

Oil prices fell as Middle East supply concerns eased after Trump’s comments on Iran amid productive talks to end their war that has disrupted global energy markets.

Brent crude futures dropped 1.31 per cent to US$102.90 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures eased 0.92 per cent to US$90.65.

The U.S. President’s pledge not to renew military attacks on Iran before the midterm elections along with China’s resumption of product exports were moving prices lower, PVM Oil Associates analyst Tamas Varga said.
|

|
|
|
“Yet, the escalation ... in the Persian Gulf and around the Red Sea has dashed hopes that swelling oil exports from the region will be sustainable and, as such, a protracted fall in oil prices in the foreseeable future seems implausible.”
|
|
|
|
|
In other commodities, spot gold rose 1.4 per cent to US$4,190.57 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for December delivery gained 1.4 per cent to US$4,215.30.

The Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart.

The day range on the loonie was 70.09 US cents to 70.39 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was down about 2.54 per cent against the greenback over the past month. It traded at $1.4233 per US$1.

The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, declined 0.04 per cent to 102.10.
|
|
|

The euro rose 0.04 per cent to US$1.1217. The British pound gained 0.05 per cent to US$1.3237.

In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 5.255 per cent.

8:30 a.m. ET: Canadian employment for September. The Street is expecting a gain of 9,200 jobs (versus a loss of 41,700 jobs in August) with the unemployment rate rising 0.1 per cent to 6.5 per cent.
