Growing up in the Midwest, I savored the chill in the air and the vibrant changing leaves. They were synonymous with back-to-school season, cozy game nights, and a sense of family. It was (and is!) my mother’s favorite season, and her birthday is at the end of September. As a child, I remember it being one of the times of year when she seemed most at ease. There was the welcome structure of the school year, before the busyness of the holidays, and the cooling temperatures seemed to temper some of the heat and discontent that summer had stirred up in our home. For my siblings and me, it was the season of football games, candy corn (!!), and raking leaves into enormous piles to jump in across the lawn. Now that I’m raising my own family in Los Angeles, we don’t have the same autumnal foliage. But what we lack in changing leaves and sugar-laden orange-ish snacks, I try to make up for in sweet routines that foster that same sense of slowing down, coming together, and honoring the season we’re in. I want my girls to know the comfort of familiar rituals and the joy of anticipating something together. Here are a few of the rituals we’re enjoying this season. Full moon ceremoniesMy daughter and I have a full moon ceremony each month of the year, but there’s something especially potent about the energy of fall. Our ritual is simple and was taught to me by a spiritual teacher many years ago. Over time, we’ve made it our own, but here’s the essence. She and I sit together on the floor with ten glasses of water. We offer prayers of gratitude, and then take a sip from each glass and write a blessing or prayer for the month. I see the full moon as a time to enhance what’s already present, and the new moon as a time to call in something entirely new. (I’m in a full moon stage of my life, there is so much here that I want to nurture and appreciate.) After the water glasses and prayers, we each draw a card from an oracle or angel deck. We’re currently very into this Lunar Abundance deck, created by my friend Dr. Ezzie Spencer, with beautiful, uplifting themes and drawings. After we each draw a single card, my daughter then likes to draw all the cards and trade until she has her favorites.
