This session will highlight how community‑engaged data science can improve women’s health by showcasing real‑world applications ranging from statewide sickle cell disease care improvements to machine‑learning approaches for understanding endometriosis.
Dr. Paula Tanabe, PhD, RN is the Laurel B. Chadwick Distinguished Professor in the School of Nursing and Professor in the School of Medicine at Duke University. Dr. Tanabe is a nationally recognized expert on improving the treatment of individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the emergency department (ED) and has conducted multiple trials to improve treatment of vaso-occlusive episodes (VOE) in the ED with a strong focus on implementation of individualized vs. weight-based opioid protocols.
Dr. Marina Sirota is a Professor and the Interim Director at the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at UCSF. Her research interests lie in developing computational integrative methods and applying these approaches in the context of disease diagnostics and therapeutics with a special focus on women’s health. She leads the UCSF March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center at UCSF as well as co-directs ENACT, a center to study precision medicine for endometriosis.
