Suicide in the Context of Chronic Pain and Opioid Dose Reduction

This presentation will

• Describe associations between opioid dose reduction and adverse events in national samples of Veterans
• Provide insights from the only U.S. study to directly obtain case histories among those with chronic pain and a history of prescription opioid dose reduction (Clinical Context of Suicide Following Opioid Transitions)
• Establish the rationale for asking what happened in patients who took their own lives, the method of seeking these histories, and the insights they yield

Stefan Kertesz is a physician researcher in internal medicine and addiction medicine with a  history of research and clinical work focused on patients experiencing homelessness, problems of substance use, pain and suicide. He has led research on homelessness, addiction, pain and suicide. He is also cohost of the On Becoming a Healer podcast with a fellow VA-based physician, Dr. Saul Weiner.

Travis Lovejoy, PhD, MPH

Professor, Department of Psychiatry Oregon Health & Science University

Clinical Director, Portland Veterans Rural Health Resource Center, VHA Office of Rural Health

Dr. Lovejoy is a Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University and Co-Director of a National Veterans Rural Health Resource Center focused on advancing innovative research in pain management, substance use disorders, and access to care for vulnerable and under-resourced rural Veterans. Dr. Lovejoy has expertise in patient-centered approaches for the management of co-occurring pain and substance use disorders and has conducted research that characterizes outcomes of patients following discontinuation of long-term opioid therapy.

The Learning Community represents an ongoing collaboration among multiple Suicide Prevention entities within VA including the Office of Suicide Prevention, VA Office of Research and Development Suicide Prevention Actively Managed Portfolio (SP AMP), VISN 2 Center of Excellence for Suicide Prevention (CoE), Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC), and Suicide Prevention Research Impact NeTwork (SPRINT). 

The Office of Suicide Prevention is responsible for Suicide Prevention operations and supports both the CoE and Rocky Mountain MIRECC, who research Veteran suicide prevention and aid OSP with implementation and evaluation of new clinical programing. The SP AMP is the primary funder of Suicide Prevention research in VA while SPRINT serves as VA’s suicide prevention research core that helps connect clinicians and investigators with both ORD and OSP.
