for the hike preparation you asked about i think the key is really in the layering and making sure you have enough water filtration capacity i usually carry two liters but the sawyer squeeze works well if you are near streams also pick up some moleskin just in case your boots are newish i would advise breaking them in for at least a couple of weeks beforehand otherwise blisters can really ruin the first day i packed my gear last night and realized my backpack straps needed adjusting so make sure you do a full test pack and walk around the block one other thing is the altitude we will be hitting around ten thousand feet so maybe practice some deep breathing exercises or just take it slow the first few miles the weather looks clear so that is a bonus but i grabbed a light rain jacket from the bin anyway it is better to have it and not need it i can share the gps track if you want to see the elevation profile before we leave

i just finished reading the overstory and it completely changed how i look at trees and storytelling i know you mentioned you wanted something with intricate character development and that one has it in spades it weaves together nine different narratives and somehow they all tie back to a single grove of chestnut trees it took me a little while to get into the rhythm of the writing but once i did i could not put it down i am starting something lighter next maybe project hail mary since i need a palette cleanser after all that emotional weight if you want something shorter i also read this little book called piranesi which is strange but beautiful and reads like a dream it is only about two hundred pages so it goes quickly i think you would enjoy the atmosphere in it i can drop it off at your place next week if you want to borrow it
