Good afternoon. It’s Thursday, June 25.

In today's newsletter:

  • Gov. Mike Dunleavy vetoed close to $90 million from the state budget, including funding for teacher incentive payments, Head Start grants and a study on public education spending adequacy.

  • Anchorage’s three main ice arenas could soon be under new management, with the Assembly meeting Friday to vote on contracts granting oversight to two major players in the city’s hockey scene.

  • The state explained why it disqualified Dan J. Sullivan from appearing on the primary ballot, telling the Alaska Superior Court that it has the authority under the U.S. Constitution to manage how elections are held.

Long after Mexico’s World Cup win against South Korea, fans young and old lined up outside the stadium to take photos with Héctor Chávez and his big black sombrero. Chávez is arguably as well-known in Mexico as the members of the national team. Meet "Caramelo," the Mexico superfan attending his 11th World Cup.

Anchorage weather

It's partly sunny today with a high near 68 degrees. Friday will start out mostly sunny before there's a chance of scattered showers, and the forecast calls for rain throughout the weekend.
