City Council Adopts Green Building Policy

On June 23, 2026, the Fairfax City Council adopted the Green Building Policy. The decision was unanimous. Watch the public hearing

The green building policy will help the City of Fairfax provide climate change mitigation,
community adaptation, and environmental benefits; reduce GHG emissions and increase
clean energy; and increase economic, social, and health benefits for the community.

Following the initial implementation of the policy for the public and private sectors, city staff will conduct a comprehensive review and update the policy at least every five years.

Through ongoing monitoring, reporting, and structured updates, the City of Fairfax will ensure the Green Building Policy remains a strong, forward-thinking tool to drive high-performance, sustainable development, and support long-term environmental and economic benefits.
