We just got back from the park with my friend’s new puppy. He’s a golden retriever mix and has the floppiest ears I’ve ever seen. He kept trying to chase the bigger dogs but would trip over his own paws halfway there. It was hilarious to watch him figure out how to navigate the grassy hill by the pond. He’d get about ten feet, then roll down sideways and look completely confused. We must have sat on that bench for almost an hour just watching him explore every leaf and stick. My friend is already talking about signing him up for a training class because he refuses to walk nicely on a leash. Honestly though, I think he’s just excited to be outside. He’s still young and has so much energy. I offered to dog-sit next weekend so they can go out of town for a day trip. It should be fun, even if it means puppy-proofing my apartment all over again. I’m looking forward to it.
We ended up grabbing coffee after and talked about maybe doing a hiking trip next month if the weather stays nice. There’s a trail about an hour north that loops around a small lake. It’s supposed to be pretty easy, only about three miles, so even the puppy should be able to handle it. I’ll need to pick up some better walking shoes before then, though. Mine are completely worn out from last summer. Anyway, that was pretty much my whole afternoon. It was nice to just unplug and hang out without looking at a screen for a few hours.

Hey, have you tried that new sourdough starter recipe yet? I finally got around to attempting it last weekend and let’s just say my kitchen looked like a flour bomb went off. I mixed up the starter on Friday night and by Sunday morning it was bubbling over the edge of the jar. I thought for sure I was on the right track, but the first loaf came out so dense it was almost like a brick. The crust was great, though, so I’m not completely discouraged. I think my mistake was not letting it proof long enough. I was too impatient and baked it after only four hours. Everyone online says you need to wait at least eight, sometimes overnight in the fridge. I’m going to try again this weekend and follow the timing exactly. A friend also told me to use filtered water instead of tap, so I’ll give that a shot. It’s kind of relaxing, the whole process of kneading and waiting. Even if I don’t get a perfect loaf right away, it’s a nice way to spend a rainy afternoon. I’ll let you know how the next batch turns out. Maybe I’ll drop off a slice if it actually looks presentable.
I also started rearranging my living room furniture this week. Just felt like a change. I moved the sofa away from the wall and angled it toward the window. It opens up the space way more than I expected. I might look for a small rug to tie it all together, something light-colored to keep it from feeling too dark in the evenings. It’s funny how a tiny shift in layout can make the whole room feel new.
