Dayton VA Public Affairs -- The Dayton VA Hospice and Palliative Care unit has a memorial each year to remember the Veterans who’ve passed over the last year. We hope this video helps to honor them and bring solace to their families.
A congressional oversight visit took place at Dayton VA Wednesday. Congressional staff and VA officials met with our Executive Leadership Team to ask questions and check on the progress of the new Electronic Health Record (EHR) which goes live on June 6th. They also talked to members of our Change Leadership Team and other employees who are learning about the new system. The group also toured our new ICU and Surgical and Medical (SAM) unit, taking time out to speak with a Veteran about his stay at Dayton VA and to wish him a speedy recovery.
Last week Dayton VA celebrated Nurses Week. Thursday VA Deputy Chief Nursing Officer Jennifer Strawn spent the day with Dayton VA nurses. Our nurses have a great impact on Veterans every day and they were recognized for their skills, compassion and advocacy. Ms. Strawn met with the leadership team and others to discuss the new Electronic Health Record which nurses are learning and will go live in a month. She also held a town hall with nurses and met with employees in hospice, the Community Living Center and other areas. VISN 10 (regional) Chief Nursing Officer Barbara Teal also was at Dayton VA to honor our nurses for the dignity, trust and care they provide Veterans.
 To kick off Research Week, a celebration was held Monday on campus. VA Researchers were the featured speakers sharing their research, experience and breakthroughs. About 70 were in attendance including Dayton VA leadership, research and education staff, physicians and representatives from academic affiliates from schools like Wright State University and University of Dayton. They discussed how they can strengthen their relationships in research to continue to provide world-class health care to Veterans.
 Born in Manhattan to Japanese immigrants, Yeiichi “Kelly” Kuwayama was drafted about a year before Pearl Harbor. The Princeton graduate was editing statistics at the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in New York City when his draft notice arrived.

During May, VA honors Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, recognizing the commitment and courage of generations of Veterans and service members. From battles of the past to missions of today, their dedication to service inspires us all.

 From May 7th until June 11th, Veterans will not be able to request or self-schedule VA or community care appointments online. From May 27th until June 11th, Veterans will not be able to cancel appointments online. To schedule or cancel appointment during this time, call 937-268-6511.
 Veterans may start to notice fewer text messages from VEText about your appointments. This is normal and part of the transition to the Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR). As part of this change, some VEText features will be removed, including the ability to use your phone to check in for your appointments. You can always check in for your appointments by visiting the check-in desk.
 Attention Veterans!
Do you use My HealtheVet on VA.gov to manage your prescriptions? When Dayton VA is switching over to the Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) on June 6th, there will be temporary changes to messaging and prescription refills and renewals online.
You can communicate with your providers through secure online messages through May 30th. From May 31st until June 8th, you won’t be able to use secure messaging. This includes sending secure messages to request prescription renewals.
You can request refills of your VA prescriptions online until midnight ET on June 2nd.
From June 3-8, you won’t be able to request refills online through My HealtheVet or VA.gov.
During this time, Veterans can still request medications by phone, by mail, or during an appointment.
Starting June 8th, My HealtheVet on VA.gov will be back online and available for managing your VA prescriptions.

Dayton VA pharmacy is now paperless. Medication filled at the Dayton VA or mailed by Dayton VA will have a QR code printed on the prescription label. Prescriptions filled and mailed by Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (CMOP) are excluded Veterans who prefer paper should let pharmacy know when picking up prescriptions and they will get the paperwork.

Here is what’s happening at the canteen retail store.
The entrance to Primary Care is now at building 341, next to the Women's Clinic. There will be no direct connection between Primary Care and the main hospital. You will need to go outside to go from one building to the other. Construction continues at the Primary Care building and is expected to be completed in about a year and a half.

The Coffee Hour and 12 Step Meetings are offered by Mental Health to all Veterans in recovery, even if not engaged with Mental Health.

The Dayton VAMC now has a Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) with Legal Aid of Western Ohio (LAWO). They will be offering civil legal services for all Veterans that qualify. They will be on site every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 2pm in Building 409, first floor, Homeless Program.
