We have a new columnist!

Sara Randazzo will cover the business and power dynamics driving the nation's legal system.

Her first piece for her new column Power of Attorney published today. Read it below.

Insider trading case exposes gaps in law firm security

An insider-trading scheme unveiled this week by federal prosecutors in Boston laid out what looked like the perfect crime of opportunity. Corporate lawyers allegedly mined internal law‑firm systems for deal secrets and tipped accomplices to earn tens of millions of dollars off well‑timed trades. In her new column, Power of Attorney, Sara Randazzo looks at how the case exposes gaps in law firm security and harkens back to incidents from the past. Read her first column here.

A note from Sara:

Welcome to Power of Attorney, my new column exploring the business and power dynamics of the legal industry. I’m interested in all levels of the legal system, from the big-law lawyers billing $3,000 an hour to plaintiffs representing themselves.

I first started covering the legal industry in 2009, at a time when the Great Recession was causing turmoil within large law firms. I remember law-firm associates being laid off en masse, major firms going into bankruptcy and others wringing their hands over lost clients and the future of their business.

I’ve followed the highs and lows of the profession since, watching the revolving door of attorney poaching, the changing demands of law-firm clients and plaintiffs attorneys looking for the next hot target.

I want to hear from you with ideas for future columns. Please reach me at sara.randazzo@thomsonreuters.com.
