Today: Should the DVD player make a comeback? Plus…

| Alexander Aciman/NYT Wirecutter |
Last year, writer Alexander Aciman found himself unable to part with his ample DVD collection — filled with whole seasons of TV shows, beloved rom-coms, and Criterion Collection editions of his favorite films — despite having nothing to play them on. So he decided to buy one of the cheapest, smallest DVD players out there.
It’s barely larger than a single disc case, looks discreet on display, and plugs directly into the HDMI port on any modern smart TV. “This DVD player and all of the associated behaviors — the dimming of lights, the making of popcorn,” he says, “transport me back to the Friday-night rituals that made me fall in love with movies in the first place.”
