Ted Turner, the billionaire founder of CNN, pioneering media mogul, environmental philanthropist, and professional provocateur, died this week at the age of 87.
Turner attended Brown University but was famously kicked out before graduating. The university later awarded him an honorary bachelor’s degree in 1989.
Then, in 1993, Turner returned to Brown to receive an honorary doctorate and deliver a commencement address that was equal parts hilarious, bizarre, and eerily ahead of its time.
During the speech, Turner joked about being suspended for having women in his dorm room, insisting he was simply opposed to discrimination. But beneath the irreverence was a serious warning about the environmental crisis he believed was coming. He closed by offering his own rewrite of the Ten Commandments – what he called the “Ten Voluntary Initiatives.”
If you have a half hour, it’s worth a watch. You won’t be disappointed.
