Cubbie News
Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,
This week is Staff Appreciation Week, and our school is full of gratitude. It is a joy to pause and recognize the relentless passion, ingenuity, and care our staff members pour into our students every day. They truly are the heart of our school.
A huge "thank you" goes out to our amazing PTA for organizing such a wonderful week of festivities. We also want to thank you, our families, for your constant support of our educators. Your partnership is the fuel that keeps our classrooms thriving!
We officially launched into assessments with an energetic SOL Pep Rally on Monday! We shared positive messages, reviewed strategies, and had some fun to celebrate our Cubbies hard work this year. Our Cubbies are pumped and ready to show off everything they’ve learned.
As we navigate these spring assessments together, here is how you can help your student shine:
- Rest Up: Ensure your Cubbie gets plenty of sleep the night before testing so their mind is fresh.
- Fuel Up: A nutritious breakfast provides the focus and energy they need to power through.
- Be Punctual & Positive: Arriving on time with a "can-do" attitude sets the tone for a successful day.
- Take it Slow: Encourage them to read every question thoroughly, utilize their classroom strategies, and keep trying even when a problem looks tough.
- Confidence is Key: Remind your child to believe in themselves! They have put in the hard work, and we know they are ready to succeed.
Thank you for your continued support!
Warmly,
Melissa Miller, Principal
Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Her nomination read, “I have seen amazing growth in our shared students this year and so much of it is due to Daisy's unwavering follow-through, clear expectations, and strong relationships that she has built with students and staff at Cub Run. We are so fortunate to have Daisy here and I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to work with her. It has been a wonderful collaboration.”

Family Input Form for 2026-27 Class Placement
With the end of the year quickly approaching, we are already looking ahead and planning for the 2026 -27 school year. We want to share some insight into our student placement process to ensure transparency and clarity for all families. Our goal is to create balanced, heterogeneous learning environments. To achieve this, we consider numerous criteria and several key factors, which include, a mix of performance levels and learning abilities, balance the distribution of girls and boys, and grouping students to ensure our resource teachers can provide maximum support. Placement decisions are a collaborative, intentional, and thoughtful effort involving current teachers, counselors, and specialists to set up our Cubbies for success.
To maintain a fair and effective learning environment, we do not honor requests for specific teachers. We prioritize instructional needs and individual student strengths above all else. Additionally, staffing assignments can change over the summer due to enrollment fluctuations. To avoid confusion or disappointment, staff members are instructed not to share placement information until the end of summer when rosters are finalized.
While we cannot accept specific teacher requests, we highly value your perspective on your child’s learning style and needs. If there is essential information you would like us to consider, please let us know by completing this family input form by May 15, 2026.
Your feedback, combined with our professional staff’s recommendations, helps us create the best possible environment for your child’s success. Thank you for your partnership!

Attendance is Important: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
School accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused. A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10% - that is only 2 days per month on average.
As of May 5, Cub Run’s Year to Date Chronic Absenteeism rate has decreased to 10.0%, being in the yellow zone. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.
Did you know? Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Consistent attendance helps students build confidence, maintain friendships, and stay on track with their lessons.
Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit our website for more attendance resources.
Positivity Project
This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm means approaching life with energy and excitement, and it helps bring joy to those around us.
When people are enthusiastic, they show excitement about tasks, making it easier for them and others to stay involved. Enthusiastic people often inspire others, bringing fresh ideas and helping groups work better together.
Enthusiasm is contagious! It can lead to more success and happiness for both individuals and groups. When one person shows enthusiasm, it can encourage others to feel more energized and motivated, too.
To practice and encourage the character strength of enthusiasm at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments
Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.
FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.
Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.
It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.

Your Child's Mental Wellness Matters: Access Comprehensive Services
Reach out to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) for specialized youth mental health services designed to help your child succeed. The CSB has individual and family counseling, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, recovery supports that include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), intensive services, and other services.

Additional Mental Health Resources
FCPS has resources available to support your child’s mental health. During after-school hours, parents and students who need additional support can use the 988 Lifeline to get free, confidential guidance from trained crisis counselors on how to best help someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. You can call or text the number.
Recent reports have shared an 11% drop in suicides among young people since the rollout of 988. Please note, the hotline is not only for those experiencing suicidal ideation (or thoughts), it is also available for any mental health or substance abuse-related crisis and those with a loved one experiencing those crises or suicidal thoughts.
And as always, if your concern is an emergency, you should call 911.
