| Good morning. As someone who for many years covered the utility industry, it's been interesting for me to see how soaring electric and heating bills have become a legitimate first-tier issue in our national politics. The editorial board today looks at some aggressive approaches to reining in those costs being taken by governors, particularly Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. And the board draws some contrasts with what Illinois is doing — or not doing. A second editorial takes on a little-understood part of the state's controversial SAFE-T Act: a new process for state decertification of local police officers deemed guilty of serious misconduct. That process is off to a bumpy start, but its aims are important and worthy, the board finds. Speaking of controversial topics, artificial intelligence gets a lot of attention these days. Paul Vallas writes that schools shouldn't be afraid to use the tool in the classroom in order to ensure kids are learning. And Willie Wilson, a regular contributor, has thoughts on the state budget, which must be finalized by the end of the month. Budgets are moral documents, he writes, and thus far he thinks this one isn't passing muster.
