Arlington County is updating its Comprehensive Plan with a new Introduction and Guiding Principles!
Welcome back to the Comprehensive Plan Update mini-series. We are excited to relaunch this newsletter to keep you informed and involved as we work toward drafting Arlington’s Comprehensive Plan Introduction and Guiding Principles.
Using community input gathered throughout 2025, the County has drafted a significant piece of the Comprehensive Plan Introduction—Arlington’s Guiding Principles and their complementary Supporting Statements.
This mini-series will walk you through these draft Guiding Principles and Supporting Statements that were specifically written for Arlington. While the wording is new, the ideas behind them are firmly based on County‑adopted policies and initiatives.
Remind me again, what is this Comprehensive Plan Update project?
In 2024, Arlington County kicked off a process to create an introduction to Arlington's Comprehensive Plan. A comprehensive plan is a long-range plan for livability and what the community wants to look like in the future. Arlington’s Plan highlights values and priorities and guides the County Board’s decision making as the community grows.
The new Comprehensive Plan Introduction will include:
- guiding principles that reflect people's lived experiences and align with community needs and values
- data about what life is like in Arlington today and trends and projections for the future
- an overview of the County’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges
- an overview of how the 12 elements of the plan work together to support the County’s goals and realize Arlington's vision
- an outline of the process for future Comprehensive Plan element updates to align with the guiding principles
