SEEC Offers Computer Skills Training to Arlington's Latino Immigrant Community

An image shows a spotlight shining down to the right.

With funding from Arlington County’s digital equity grant program, the Shirlington Employment and Education Center (SEEC) is teaching 120 Spanish-speaking Arlington residents basic computer skills at the Arlington Mill Community Center. The seven-week course, taught in Spanish by Marco Mandujano, provides hands-on basic skills training on topics such as hardware, software, internet connection and mechanics, professional communication, social media, common apps, and internet safety and security. Students who successfully complete the course keep the tablets they were provided and receive continued one-on-one mentoring and assistance through SEEC’s Digital Navigator program, which is also funded through the digital equity grant program.

SEEC helps Spanish-speaking Arlington residents learn basic computer skills.

Many Latino immigrants who arrive in Arlington are well-educated but lack the English language and digital skills that provide access to opportunity. Providing digital skills training equips the students with basic job skills; enables them to better support their children’s education and use online services such as banking, the Arlington County Library, and employment sites; and opens the door to many free training and educational programs, including English language training. According to SEEC Executive Director Andres Tobar, the digital equity grant fills a critical role in helping Spanish-speaking immigrants become fully self-sufficient and integrated into the Arlington community.
