‘Biblical Outlaws: What the Bible’s Most Despised Characters Can Teach Us’ by Anthony B. Pinn
This intriguing if dense biblical analysis from Pinn, a professor of humanities at Rice University, explores scripture through the eyes of marginal characters often sidelined in theological interpretations. Pinn pushes against familiar biblical narratives with rich and rigorous analysis, though his argument can sometimes get bogged down in jargon. Still, scholars of the Bible will find value here. more

‘Imma See for Myself: A Stubborn Girl’s Guide to Trusting God (the First Time Around)’ by Ariel Fitz-Patrick
Singer and social media star Fitz-Patrick debuts with a candid memoir of her rocky relationship with God. Fitz-Patrick is refreshingly vulnerable about her struggles with belief, and dispenses solid counsel about reconnecting with God without being didactic. This will be a boon for believers grappling with doubts of their own. more

‘The God of Our Fathers: The Great Stories of the Bible’ by Aldo Cazzullo, trans. from the Italian by Sylvia Notini
Italian journalist Cazzullo vividly revisits key scenes and characters from the Old Testament. The author’s strength is his ability to mine scripture for its myriad connections to centuries of art, literature, and philosophy, including drawing out unexpected parallels, such as how Jacob’s famous wrestling match with an angel recalls Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier’s 1971 “Fight of the Century.” Even less religious readers will be intrigued. more

‘Pope Leo XIV: The Biography’ by Elise Ann Allen, trans. from the Spanish by Stephen R. Di Trolio
Allen, a senior correspondent at Crux, draws from a wealth of interviews with Pope Leo XIV and his family members, friends, and colleagues for this laudatory biography. While Allen’s detailed portrait of Leo is rosy and mostly uncritical, she does briefly address concerns about his handling of a sexual abuse case. This effusive portrait doesn’t break much new ground, but there’s enough here to please Leo’s admirers. more
