Hey Bob,

Here's something I've noticed over the years…

When people email me about their language learning, they rarely say things like "I'm struggling with grammar."

Instead, they say…

"I'm so tired of feeling like a dumb teenager whenever I open my mouth."

It's never really about the grammar. It's about confidence. Identity. Feeling like yourself when you speak a different language.

That's why I sat down with Anna Tyrie (English Like A Native) for the latest episode of my podcast. Anna spent years training actors to master accents at places like the Royal Academy of Music. Professionals whose careers depended on sounding authentic.

Here's what fascinated me…

When she assesses a new language learner, there are usually only 4 or 5 vowel changes they need to make to see a huge improvement in clarity.

Not a complete overhaul. Not years of drilling. A handful of specific shifts.

She also shared a technique actors use called an "anchor" — a single phrase that snaps you into the right sound before you speak. (Imagine saying one sentence before your next conversation that puts your mouth in exactly the right place…)

In this episode, we get into:

  • Why vowels—not consonants—are the real key to being understood
  • How to train your ear when you literally can't hear the difference
  • A DIY method for improving your accent without a teacher
