Rhode Islanders are waking up to shocking new details about a weekend mass shooting at Brown University that left two dead and wounded nine others.
A person of interest who was taken into custody early Sunday morning has been released after initial leads “came back negative,” Attorney General Peter Neronha said during a late-night press conference on Sunday.
“Certainly there was some degree of evidence that pointed to this individual, but that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed,” Neronha said. “And over the last 24 hours, leading until just very very recently, that evidence now points in a different direction.”
Neronha said his office is working with local, state, and federal law enforcement as the manhunt for the gunman continues, although he noted that Providence police remains the lead on the case.
Providence Police Chief Colonel Oscar Perez said police are still looking for the person seen in a short video clip outside the Barus and Holley engineering and physics building shortly after the shooting – the only video of the alleged suspect that has been released to date.
Where things go from here: At the same press conference Sunday evening, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley sought to reassure Providence residents and the Brown University community that officials do not believe there is an immediate risk to the public, even though a suspect is not currently in custody.
Smiley said there will be an elevated police presence across the city – and especially nearly Brown – on Monday, and Brown has canceled most final exams and allowed students to leave campus early for holiday break.
“We know this will likely cause fresh anxiety for our community,” Smiley said.
This is obviously a fast-moving case, and The Globe has a team of reporters that will continue to bring you up-to-date information as it is released and uncovered.
