This column recently noted the opportunity for Washington’s NFL team to attract a national fanbase by rolling out a patriotic rebranding. President Trump has been urging the return of the team’s controversial Redskins moniker, while a recent poll found that people like the current Commanders name even less. Now a longtime Washington fan suggests an intriguing new option just as the opening to create a nationwide following seems to have gotten a little wider. The rival Dallas Cowboys, who have long called themselves
America’s Team, lately are looking especially vulnerable to surrendering the crown. Cowboys fans have been waiting impatiently for decades since their team’s last Super Bowl title, and now the team’s most beloved fan is blaming ownership. Christian Arnold reports for the New York Post: Celebrity Cowboys fan and Hollywood A-lister Denzel Washington ripped owner Jerry Jones during an appearance on ESPN’s “First Take.” Washington and Spike Lee were appearing on the ESPN program to promote their new movie “Highest 2 Lowest” when the Cowboys came up, and the two-time Academy Award-winning actor took aim at the the franchise’s owner. “I’ve been a Cowboys fan since the ’60s. He’s making it hard for me,” Washington said about Jones. “Not to be a fan, because I’m still a Cowboys fan. I’m still going to have the star on the side of the hat, but he ain’t thinking about us. He’s thinking about his pocket.”
