HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is trying to rewrite history. In a two-and-a-half-minute video last week, Kennedy explained the department’s decision to cut $500 million of mRNA vaccine research funding, blaming the lack of efficacy of approved shots.
Scientific consensus is not on Kennedy’s side, and the funding pullback is “tragic,” Dr. Bill Moss, executive director of International Vaccine Access Center said in a recent interview, where he detailed the ways in which Kennedy’s statements were misleading. A shooting at the CDC last week underscores the power of misleading statements as the gunman was under the impression he had been injured by the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, a notion Kennedy has perpetuated for years.
Now, with the cuts to mRNA funding in the books, vaccine makers face new challenges. Today, we’re looking at one company developing vaccines with more traditional methods, and how slashing mRNA funding will alter the landscape for everyone involved.
