Top New York Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, and Gov. Kathy Hochul have all refused to endorse him.

The moment Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York, a big-money crusade to destroy his reputation sprang into action.

Bill Ackman, the pro-Trump hedge fund billionaire, pledged “hundreds of millions of dollars” to defeat Mamdani in the general election. Wall Street and the real estate industry are spending big as well. And the pro-Israel lobby is doing all it can to brand Mamdani, who is Muslim, as an antisemite.

Meanwhile, instead of exposing the money behind these attacks, major news outlets like the New York Times are piling on with their own race-baiting smears.

The Intercept has been covering Mamdani for years, going back to his time as a candidate for New York Assembly in 2020 — and our team of investigative journalists is digging deep to follow the money and expose the powerful forces attacking him now.

Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York on a platform of affordability and transparency.

No wonder so many big-money special interests are trying to destroy him.

But the attacks aren’t just coming from the usual suspects. Establishment Democrats have the knives out for Mamdani as well.

Top New York Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, and Gov. Kathy Hochul have all refused to endorse him. New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand accused Mamdani of supporting “global jihad” in a stunning display of anti-Muslim bigotry.

The New York Times went so far as to publish an editorial effectively endorsing Andrew Cuomo, who they called on to resign as governor just four short years ago.

The Intercept has a long history of analyzing campaign spending and the influence of money in politics. For instance, when AIPAC spent big in 2024 to attack progressive Democrats who had spoken up in favor of Palestinian rights, we tracked every dime.

Today, we’re poring over campaign finance reports to expose the hedge fund billionaires, real estate magnates, and other corporate interests jumping into New York’s mayoral race. It’s the kind of reporting that corporate news outlets like the New York Times should be doing, but the only way we as a nonprofit, reader-funded organization can undertake this kind of ambitious independent journalism is with the support of readers like you.
