On Birthright Citizenship, the Supreme Court Gives Trump a Blunt Tool to Hammer Judges Welcome to the weekend. While the Supreme Court did not revoke birthright citizenship yesterday—phew!—the conservative supermajority did refuse to flat out stop Donald Trump’s attempts to deny the constitutional right to some children of immigrants. And in limiting the use of nationwide injunctions, Cristian Farias writes, the “justices ensured confusion and uncertainty will reign in all 50 states.”
Speaking of the Supreme Court, we spent the earlier part of the week considering the fallout of the “devastating” Dobbs decision, as Kamala Harris put it to Katie Herchenroeder on the three-year anniversary of Roe’s demise. Molly Jong-Fast marked this grim milestone by reflecting on the legacy of second wave feminists and the state of the movement today.
Elsewhere, Zoë Bernard caught up with Craig Silverstein, creator of Pantheon, a short-lived, futuristic animated series that’s become a sleeper hit in Silicon Valley, while Chris Smith sat down with former Obama speechwriter David Litt, whose new memoir, ostensibly about surfing, explores the divide between so-called “elites” and MAGA voters and offers lessons for his party.
“In a moment when the Democrats didn’t win the popular vote, understanding is no longer an option,” says Litt. “It doesn’t mean you have to agree, but curiosity is now not just intellectually important—it might be the make-or-break quality if we’re gonna save the country.” Thanks for reading.
