At the halfway point of their season Tuesday night, Game 81 of 162, the Red Sox suffered a 3-2 loss in 10 innings to the Angels that illustrated well the problem for this particular version of the team.
Rookie Marcelo Mayer totaled three hits, scored a run, and drove in the other. Ace Garrett Crochet tossed seven shutout innings, striking out 10 and dropping his ERA to 2.06. Aroldis Chapman recorded a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
But because these Red Sox have virtually no margin for error, they still lost. Christian Moore, a Suffield Academy grad in his first month in the majors, tagged righthander Greg Weissert for a tying home run in the eighth and lefthander Justin Wilson for a walkoff two-run shot in the 10th.
