Dear CWES Families,
Next week is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, a special time for us to show our gratitude for all that they do. Our theme this year is: CWES Teachers are OZ-some! We are incredibly fortunate to have such an amazing and caring group of teachers and staff here at CWES. Their dedication, passion, and hard work make a real difference in the lives of our students every single day. It reminds us of the sentiment, "Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." This quote truly reflects the lasting impact our teachers and staff have on our children.
We encourage all members of our community – parents, guardians, and students – to take a moment to thank our wonderful teachers and staff. Even a simple note of appreciation can go a long way in brightening their day and letting them know how much they are valued.
Let's make next week a truly special one for our OZ-some CWES team!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Mindy Milliron

Join us for our Quarter 4 Family Book Club: CWES Loves Art on Thursday, May 29th at 8:15 am in the library and/or art room. An adult must be in attendance with their student. Students and families can choose from one of 2 books: the picture book: Ablaze with Color: A Story of Painter Alma Thomas or the chapter book: Me, Frida, and the Secret of the Peacock Ring. Families are encouraged to read the books alongside their students. We will celebrate our final book club with a fun art activity to go along with our theme!
You can sign up using the flyer found in Tuesday Folders or the following link: CWES Family Book Club - Quarter 4.

Hidden Oaks Nature Center was a hit with our kindergarteners this week during their field trip!
The 2025 Spring SOL testing schedule runs throughout the month of May. Please make every effort to avoid scheduling appointments or absences on the days your child is testing.
Each year, a team consisting of classroom teachers, special education teachers, administrators, specialists, and counselors come together to collaborate and provide feedback on the formation of class groupings. This is a comprehensive and cooperative process. We greatly appreciate your input regarding your child's learning needs. It's important to note that our staff is exceptional, and we kindly ask that you refrain from mentioning specific teacher names on this form.
Please rest assured that all forms will be carefully reviewed by our administration and teachers. While we strive to take all factors into account when determining class placements, we may not be able to fulfill every request. However, please know that all information provided will be taken into consideration as we make decisions about placement.
For your input to be considered, we kindly request that this form be completed and submitted by Friday, May 16, 2025.
Please note that staff grade level assignments may occasionally change as a result of late enrollments or other unforeseen circumstances. Staff assignments will be finalized in August.
People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions.

Excellence at a Crossroads: FCPS Budget Update
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will begin finalizing the budget on Tuesday, May 6. The current advertised budget underfunds FCPS by $150 million.
Without new revenue, such as the meals tax (adding just $2-3 to an average dining bill for a family of four), FCPS will face significant cuts.
What Is at Risk?
Go to fcps.edu/crossroads to see examples of where FCPS exceeds minimum state standards.
