Celebrating our Military-Connected Students! May is National Military Appreciation Month

May 2, 2025
Thank you for another productive and inspiring week! I want to begin by expressing my deep appreciation for our students and community as we implemented the Open Gate weapons detection pilot. Your cooperation and flexibility make a big difference. As we continue to navigate new systems and procedures, I am continually impressed by our students’ adaptability. School safety is a shared responsibility, and we remind everyone: If you see something, say something. Together, we are building a safer environment for all.
This week, we were thrilled to welcome the Class of 2029 to our campus! Our future freshmen had the opportunity to meet staff, tour the building, and start imagining the exciting possibilities that lie ahead—from engaging clubs and enriching coursework to meaningful friendships and school spirit.
We’re also celebrating academic excellence with over 750 students recognized on the 3rd Quarter Honor Roll! These outstanding students received certificates and enjoyed a well-deserved “snack attack.” Congratulations to all on your hard work and dedication!
In our efforts to strengthen community and inclusion, we had an energizing meeting with our Military Student Ambassadors. Together, we explored creative ways to increase connection and support for our military-connected students. It’s inspiring to see student leadership in action.
Our talented cast of Hadestown were offered the opportunity to inspire the next generation of theater goers as they offered a matinee performance to our middle school friends from Franklin and Kilmer.
For the last two days our commons hallway came alive with the entrepreneurial spirit of business plan creation and implementation with FHS MARKET DAYS. Several business students created pop-up shops and offered a variety of goods, services, and games in a very spirited competition. From pancakes and noodles to video games and smoothies there was something for everyone.
Looking ahead, we are gearing up for National Teacher Appreciation Week—and it’s going to be WICKED! Next week will be filled with treats, surprises, and heartfelt recognition for our staff. Their commitment, compassion, and curricular expertise make our school truly special, and we can’t wait to celebrate them.
Finally, if you’re looking for something fun this weekend, there’s still time to catch HADESTOWN or enjoy the stunning creativity of Fashion in Motion. Both promise to be unforgettable!
Thank you for your continued partnership.

Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship Winner
FHS Senior Abenezer Gelashe was selected as a recipient of the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship. The scholarship is very selective and only 400 students are chosen nationwide out of over 8000 applications. The scholarship not only provides $10,000/year in financial aid ($40,000 total), students also are able to do an internship at an Amazon site right after freshman year of college.
Abenezer has really shown his interest and enthusiasm for computer science thoughout his four years and FHS, starting with AP computer science A his freshman year and taking all the other advanced computer science courses. Last year he was one of the CS honor society officers and really worked to build enthusiasm and bring new students into the program.
We wish him the best and hopes he puts his enthusiasm and knowledge to great use wherever the future takes him! Congratulations!
DECA Intl Career Development Conference

This week, 29 of our DECA marketing students attended the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida. The students prepared written marketing research projects and creatively presented their marketing plans to industry judges, participated in individual and team decision making roleplay events as well as a comprehensive leadership program for our members.
The team of Samantha Murphy, Elinor Suh, and Elle Duangmanee were recognized as international top 10 finalists for presenting their Community Awareness project for the Side-Out Foundation. Uma Antsilevich placed top 10 internationally in Retail Merchandising. Kiran Ashok, Anna Mawloud, and Megan Barrett were recognized as international top 20 finalists for their Financial Operations Research project, which prepared a plan to integrate AI for MainStreet Bank. Eirene Kim was recognized as a top 20 finalist for Entrepreneurship.
In addition, Fairfax High School DECA chapter received recognition for achieving all four of DECA’s Chapter Campaigns in Promotion, Community Service, Membership, and Business Advocacy.
