The first thing to ask when shopping for a nightstand is: “Am I really shopping for a nightstand?” |

What even is a nightstand? A side table will indeed work just fine. As will a low dresser. Senior staff writer Joshua Lyon’s research for our brand-new guide to nightstands was all a bit confusing. So while searching for the very best options, we stayed out of the technicalities and focused instead on the basics, regardless of what the tables are called on various websites.
After researching hundreds of nightstands, Joshua lived the dream with our finalists: He spent days working from a bed in the middle of our Long Island City office. He assessed each contender for how easy it was to reach for different things, for their construction, and for their cuteness. And he ultimately landed on nine favorites that suit a wide variety of styles — from a sweet and simple Shaker-style table to a colorful and sculptural stand with cubbies.

Fortessa |
One of our favorite Mother’s Day gifts, this on-sale glass cake stand adds a bit of delight to displaying cakes, pastries, or beautiful objects. Made with durable soda-lime glass, its hobnail design is inspired by the beading style of vintage Parisian glass objects — yet it’s also surprisingly durable and dishwasher-safe.

One last thing: Our editor-in-chief lets his third grader cut his hair |

Wirecutter’s editor-in-chief Ben Frumin hasn’t gone to the barbershop in nearly a year. Instead, his daughter, who just turned 9, has been his exclusive hairstylist — using one of our favorite hair clippers, of course.
“My daughter, a third grader with no formal cosmetic training, has found these clippers to be incredibly easy to use,” writes Ben. And his daughter’s take? “They just go through the hair smoothly, and cut very smoothly,” she told her dad. “It’s a pretty good size. Not too heavy, not too light.”
