Principal's Message |
Greetings Tiger Families!
Next week we will celebrate our Twain Middle School Staff Appreciation Week. National Teacher Day began in 1953 when former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt proposed that Congress set aside a day to acknowledge the work of educators. Since 1984, National PTA has designated one week in May as Teacher Appreciation Week. Twain has partnered with our generous PTA and our talented student government for various gifts, meals, and acknowledgements throughout the week. We are excited about this celebration – especially as we move into a busy and pivotal part of the school year. Thank you also to all the educators that reside within our Twain community for the impact you have on your own students each and every day!
Last week our Twain Theatre brightened the lives of our school and community with their inspirational performance of “Matilda Jr.”, our Track and Field team had a successful first meet of the season – with our boys finishing 1st and our girls finishing 4th, our AVID students went on college visit field trips to see firsthand what higher education can look like for them, and our Technology Student Association (TSA) is currently in Hampton Roads at the TSA State Conference. With the emphasis we place on the importance of our SOL exams (which are of course important!), I believe it is equally important to highlight the many other efforts made at Twain to provide a well-rounded learning experience for our Tigers.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,
Matt

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
Jewish American Heritage Month
May is a national month of recognition of the history of Jewish contributions to American culture, acknowledging the diverse achievement of the Jewish community in the U.S.
National School Nurse Day
National School Nurse Day is Wednesday, May 7. It is a day to recognize the many contributions that school nurses make to student health and learning.
FCPS appreciates the role of School Public Health Nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. They are advocates who bridge healthcare and education by supporting student health and readiness to learn. School nurses are essential to our community and work tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of their students.
Please join us in thanking the PHNs for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students.
Thank You, Lunchtime Legends!
Today we acknowledge our lunchtime legends on School Lunch Hero Day, Friday, May 2. This is a great opportunity to extend our gratitude to all the School Lunch Heroes who work in our Food and Nutrition Services department and who go above and beyond for our students’ healthy and delicious meal choices every day.
Lightspeed Parent Reports
As a reminder, FCPS offers a free service that allows parents to stay informed about your child's online activity on any FCPS device? By completing the Lightspeed Parent Report Request, enrolling parents can sign up to receive a weekly report summarizing the websites your child visits while using an FCPS device. These reports are delivered directly to a parent's email address over the weekend by Lightspeed, FCPS's internet content filter. Visit the Lightspeed Parent Report page on the FCPS website for more information and directions on how to sign up.
Each weekly report includes a link to register for the Lightspeed Parent Portal, which provides more detailed browsing information. This portal also gives parents the ability to pause internet access on their child’s FCPS laptop during non-school hours, such as dinner or bedtime.

Twain Community Night (Friday, May 16th, 6-8pm): Volunteers Needed
Click the SignUp to see where help is needed:
The Twain PTA looks forward to joining the Mark Twain MS administration, teachers and staff in welcoming the greater Twain MS community to this annual event. This event is open to current and new students, and incoming rising 7th graders from our pyramid elementary schools, and is a fun evening for both students and parents.
PTA volunteers are needed to staff our PTA tables in the cafeteria. It’s a pretty easy event, and we just need a handful of volunteers to help us run our tables in the cafeteria.
Does your local business want to participate as a sponsor or donate an item to our raffle? Email mtmspresident@gmail.com for more information. We love opportunities to promote our community!
8th Grade Dance! (Sat. May 31st, 6-8pm): Volunteers & Donations Needed
Your 8th Grade Dance planning committee is hard at work. This past week the students voted on a theme and their voices were heard! We are currently working to bring their vision to fulfillment with various planning pieces of this event.
As you pro-actively mark this date on your calendar, please make note of a few important points:
- This event is exclusively for 8th grade students enrolled at Mark Twain MS.
- The event will be held at Mark Twain Middle School on a Saturday evening from 6-8pm.
- This is a formal attire event.
- Our 8th grade students do not have a formal FCPS graduation or promotion to high school, so this is a fun and memorable way to celebrate their accomplishments and capture those precious middle school memories as a Twain Tiger.
- Tickets will go on sale the week of the event (5/27 - 5/29). Cash purchases may be made during lunch blocks.
-
No tickets will be sold at the door. No exceptions.
In the coming days PTA members should expect to receive a SignUp Genius shared for this event and emails coming out to let our wonderful PTA membership know what might be needed from the community to make this themed event special for our 8th graders (i.e. 360 photo booth, etc).
