Texas native Elissa Brown is the featured artist for the Spring 2025 Cottonwood Art Festival taking place May 3rd 10 a.m. – 7p.m. and 4th 10 a.m. – 5p.m. at Cottonwood Park in Richardson, TX.
Her journey began in education, teaching students from kindergarten through college—all while nurturing a passion for art. Brown holds a BFA in Design from Abilene Christian University and an MFA from Syracuse University in New York. Today, her studio is located just outside of Kansas City, Missouri.
Brown’s current collection, The Freckled Army, is named in honor of her grandmother, from whom she inherited her red hair and freckles.
Elissa’s artistic path began with photography—experimenting in the darkroom with chemical processes—before evolving into mixed media featuring textured layers, paper, and woodcut environments. Her distinctive style and storytelling are deeply influenced by her love of books and her background in theatrical set design. A Cottonwood Art Festival participant since 2015, Brown describes this year’s feature as a heartfelt return home, sharing her work with a community that feels like family.
