Researchers have identified hundreds of academic papers that use artificial intelligence without disclosure, raising concerns about scientific integrity. Alex Glynn from the University of Louisville has tracked over 700 such papers, while Artur Strzelecki has found 64 in top-tier journals. Publishers, including Elsevier and Springer Nature, are investigating these cases and have varied policies on AI disclosure.
The 2025 Survey of Campus Chief Technology/Information Officers highlights significant AI governance challenges in higher education. Only 11% of institutions have a comprehensive AI strategy, and 31% report lacking any AI use policies. This lack of governance contributes to uncertainty and risks institutions losing control over AI applications to the private sector.
Getty Images and Ancestry have partnered to digitize historical records from historically Black colleges and universities, expanding the HBCU Grants Program beyond photos to include documents such as newsletters and student records. Lincoln University is the first to join, with Ancestry beginning to digitize its archives. The initiative preserves records, allows schools to earn licensing fees and provides access to Ancestry's platform.
